Bears take one win from Foundation Ground double header

Birmingham Bears recorded one win out of their two T20 matches at Edgbaston Foundation Ground on Sunday.

They lost by 42 runs in their first match against visiting Sussex before turning their luck in the second match to beat last year’s champions Lancashire by 26 runs.

They won the toss in the first match against Sussex and elected to bat first.

Sussex skipper Georgia Adams and Paige Scholfield opened the batting, with the Bears making an early breakthrough as Thea Brookes dismissed Scholfield for two runs.

It was a promising outing as Rebecca Grundy recorded some commendable bowling figures of 4/10. Georgia Davies’ 2/23 and Anisha Patel’s 1/10 contributed to making sure Sussex were within a reachable total; all out for 109 after 19.3 overs.

Their reply was a struggle as they found it challenging to put up a partnership during their innings.

Ria Fackrell top scored with 22 as the hosts found themselves 42 runs short

…………..

In the second game Birmingham Bears won the toss and sent Lancashire Women in to field.

The hosts recorded a total of 126/4 with Ria Fackrell again top scoring with 37 off 47 balls.

Fackrell’s opening partnership with Gwenan Davies (34) gave a solid base for the Bears’ innings to post a defendable total without losing their crucial wickets.

Davies’ 34 was a combination of some quick singles and six fours while Milly Home hit the boundary thrice for her 25.

Facing a target of 127, Lancashire went in to reply and had a tough time facing the determined Bears bowlers.

Skipper Rebecca Grundy grabbed 4/14 runs with Thea Brookes, Liz Russell and Georgia Davis collecting a wicket apiece.

The visitors were left needing 29 runs off the last over. With every ball having to be over the boundary in that final over, Lancashire women found the task overwhelming and ended up scoring 100 in total.

Bears seek wins back at home

Birmingham Bears women face Sussex and Lancashire at home in a third double-header of the T20 domestic season this Sunday with co-coach Alex Roslyn hoping to witness another strong performance from his side.

The Bears have so far won three of their four outings this season and Roslyn believes there is more to come from his teams.

“We are looking to continue our positive approach in the games this weekend and come away with the points,” said Roslyn. “We still feel there is a lot more to come from us in T20, so, the girls are raring to go.”

Despite the absence of captain Marie Kelly and England players Jenny Gunn and Amy Jones, there have been important contributions with both bat and ball throughout the squad says Roslyn

“The batters have formed good partnerships and the bowlers have controlled the game well. Combined with our excellent fielding we are putting constant pressure on the opposition.”

They will face Sussex at 10:30 before campaigning for maximum points against Lancashire at 4:30.
