Adam Hose is aiming to develop a vivid first impression into some sustained success for Birmingham Bears in the 2018 T20 Blast. Last summer, Hose wasted no time endearing himself to the Bears fans after joining from Somerset.

the best debut I’ve seen from a Warwickshire player

Given his debut against Lancashire Lightning at Edgbaston, he started in the most spectacular style with a dazzling 43-ball 76 to set up the team’s successful chase of a meaty target of 174.

The innings was hailed by team-mate Ian Bell as “the best debut I’ve seen from a Warwickshire player,” brought the Edgbaston crowd to its feet and underlined why the Bears had been so keen to bring Hose to the club.

He went on to score 200 runs at a strike-rate of 158.73 as Birmingham charged to the Blast final. And having set the bar high at the very start, the 25-year-old intends to raise it further in 2018.

“It was great to get some runs straight away and show my team-mates and the Bears supporters what I can do,” he said. “I guess that set the benchmark and now I just want to carry on and contribute as much as I can in the NatWestT20Blast and across all the formats.

“As a batsman in T20, it’s a question of finding the right balance. You have to be aggressive and take risks while not throwing your wicket away and it can be tricky. But we are lucky at the Bears in that we have some very experienced guys around us and they just tell us to go out there and play with freedom.

“We played some really good T20 cricket last year to get to the final but there is plenty of improvement in us yet. Hopefully next season we can go one better and win the tournament.”

The Bears’ planning for the 2018 Blast is ongoing – and global. Hose is wintering in Adelaide, Australia, and captain Grant Elliott is back in his native Wellington, New Zealand, but when they spoke recently it was Birmingham Bears matters they had in mind.

“I spoke to Grant last week and he is full of enthusiasm and really looking forward to getting back with the Bears,” Hose said. “He is a fantastic guy to have as captain, a really good cricketer with so much knowledge, and he said to us last year that we had played some good stuff but never really produced our perfect game. If we can do that in 2018 we will take some beating.”
