Blast Report: Outlaws v Bears

A brilliant batting display powered Birmingham Bears to their first Vitality Blast win of 2021, by 18 runs over Notts Outlaws at Trent Bridge.

The Bears overcame the reigning champions in their own back yard after piling up 229 for five, their third-highest ever T20 score and the highest by any side at Trent Bridge.

Ed Pollock launched the innings with an explosive 62 (34 balls, six fours, three sixes), Sam Hain kept up the tempo with a skilful unbeaten 53 (28 balls, two fours, fours sixes) and Carlos Braithwaite rounded it off with a violent 44 (18 balls, three fours, four sixes).

The powerful Notts batting order was then pegged back with the regular loss of wickets as they replied with 211 for nine, Brathwaite and Jake Lintott taking two important wickets apiece.

The Bears will travel to Derby to face Derbyshire on Sunday (2.30pm) with their Blast campaign very much up and running.

Put in, the Bears were given a flying start by an opening stand of 51 in 27 balls from Pollock and Adam Hose. Hose blasted 32 from 17 balls and raised the fifty by hitting Luke Fletcher out of the ground before falling lbw later in the over.

Will Rhodes and Pollock maintained the momentum with a stand of 69 from 37 balls. Pollock reached his half-century by lifting his 28th ball, from Peter Trego, over square leg for six. It was his fifth Blast half-century and included his 50th six in T20 cricket.

Rhodes’ departure, caught at deep mid-wicket, triggered a wobble as spinner Matt Carter dismissed Pollock and Dan Mousley in successive overs, but Hain and Brathwaite launched a blistering salvo.

Hain started it with a couple of sweetly caressed sixes. Brathwaite then took over with four violently clubbed ones, three arriving in the 19th over, from Trego, which went for 33. Hain remained unbeaten on 53, leaving his Blast batting average at Trent Bridge at 301.

It was a mighty total, but Notts have plenty of batters capable of reeling it in so the Bears needed to strike early. They did, when Alex Hales fell first ball, brilliantly caught by Rhodes at mid-wicket, to give Danny Briggs his 200th T20 wicket. When Brathwaite and Tim Bresnan each struck with their first ball to remove Joe Clarke and Trego, the Outlaws were forty for three.

Ben Duckett charged to 51 (27 balls) before Jake Lintott came on and struck with his first ball, which Duckett top-edged to short fine leg. Rhodes then failed to strike with his first ball, but did with his fifth, taking a sharp return catch to dismiss the dangerous Steven Mullaney.

The Bears kept on taking wickets at important times. Another danger man Tom Moores moved to 38 from 21 balls but perished when he sliced Brathwaite to short third man. Another fell when Samit Patel top-edged Lintott to the same position.

That left The Outlaws’ lower order needing to find 63 from the last four overs, a challenge which was far beyond them as the Bears closed the game out clinically.

Blast Preview: Outlaws v Bears

The Bears have named an unchanged 13-man squad for their visit to Notts Outlaws tonight when they will seek to open their Vitality Blast account at the second attempt.

The second of five away games to start the group phase takes the Bears to Trent Bridge where they aim to bounce back from last night’s six-wicket defeat to Yorkshire Vikings at Headingley.

They paid the price in Leeds for coming in under par with the bat but Danny Briggs, who bowled impressively for two for 29 on his Blast debut for the Bears, said it is perfect that they have an immediate chance to bounce back.

“We were probably a little bit short of runs but, as a first game of the tournament, there were positives. We scrapped really well with the ball and in the field and the beauty of Twenty20 is that we have another game straight away so we can try to put it right.

Danny Briggs

“I was pleased with the way I bowled but of course would have been happier if it had come in a win. Tonight gives us a good chance, against a good side at another Test ground, to get a win on the board and build some momentum.”

Notts Outlaws are the current Blast holders, having lifted the trophy for the first time at Finals Day at Edgbaston last September. The two sides have met 17 times in the Blast over the years with the Bears having won seven and Notts ten.

Sam Hain, who hit the ground running in the format with a fluent half-century last night, shares the record for the highest T20 knock for the Bears against Notts. He scored an unbeaten 82 at Trent Bridge in 2017, as did Ian Bell the following year.

Top bowling performance so far for the Bears against the Outlaws is Jeetan Patel’s four for 22 at Edgbaston in 2017. Olly Hannon-Dalby who, with Ethan Brookes, joins the 11 from last night in the squad tonight, took four for 29 against them in a seven-wicket win for the Bears in Birmingham in 2015.

Squad

Will Rhodes (C), Carlos Brathwaite, Tim Bresnan, Danny Briggs, Ethan Brookes, Michael Burgess, Sam Hain, Olly Hannon-Dalby, Adam Hose, Jake Lintott, Craig Miles, Dan Mousley, Ed Pollock

Blast Insight: Notts Outlaws

Here’s how the Bears opponents Notts Outlaws look for this season’s Blast ahead of our visit to Trent Bridge later today.

Coach: Peter Moores

Captain: Steven Mullaney

Last Year’s Performance: Champions

2020 Leading Runscorer: Joe Clarke (371 @ 37.10)

2020 Leading Wicket Taker: Jake Ball (19 @ 13.63)

Overseas players: Dane Paterson (South Africa – whole tournament)

Key man: Alex Hales – Had a sub-par Blast in 2020 yet bounced back as top scorer in the Big Bash and with 8,066 runs is the highest scoring Englishman in T20 history.

Flies under the radar: Steven Mullaney – Seldom makes headlines but scores quickly and has a knack of chipping in with vital wickets with his medium pace wobblers and will captain the team in the group stage following Dan Christian’s Australia call.

Best Player Under 24: Lyndon James – Yet to appear in the Blast but is expected to get his chance after impressing with bat and ball in red ball cricket this season.

Blast expectations: Semi-finalists three times in the last four seasons and winners twice, the defending champions are among the favourites again, although they must manage without left-arm spinner Imad Wasim from their title-winning team because of the clash with the rearranged Pakistan Super League, while 2020 leading wicket-taker Jake Ball has not played any cricket since April 9 because of a back injury.

Nonetheless, with a top order comprising Alex Hales, Ben Duckett and Joe Clarke and big hitters such as Tom Moores in the middle, Nottinghamshire should score heavily again, while Wasim’s absence will an opportunity for veteran all-rounder Samit Patel to show he can still make an impact in his 19th T20 campaign, having made 191 appearances since the competition began in 2003, more than any other player.

Anything less than another trip to Finals Day will be seen as a disappointment.

Nottinghamshire CCC have confirmed that no tickets will be on-sale on the gate for this game, so please do not travel to Trent Bridge unless you have tickets.

Bears fans will be able to follow the game through our social media channels and via the live stream in the Match Centre on edgbaston.com and via the Edgbaston app.
