Great Bear Asif Din has stepped down from the Club’s Members’ Committee in a move that calls time on a Warwickshire association spanning more than 50 years.

Asif made his professional debut for Warwickshire in 1981 but has represented the Club on various committees since retiring as a player in 1995.

The 64-year-old – who scored 14,873 runs for Warwickshire in 460 games – has played a role on the Cricket Committee, General Committee and most recently the Members’ Committee.

He formally left the role earlier this month after reaching the maximum six-year tenure – and was presented with a framed shirt, signed by the Warwickshire squad, as thanks for his commitment to the Club.

“I first came to Edgbaston in 1973 as a young cricketer,” said Asif, who is one of only 35 Warwickshire Honourary Life Members, “so I’ve been around the place for quite a while. A lifetime as a Bear!

“Retiring as a player in 1995 was very hard, very emotional, as it was bringing an end to a way of life I’d known for 15 years. Retiring my role on the Committee brings my formal association with the Club to a close but I’ll still be a familiar face around the ground.

“I cherish my life membership, that’s a lovely honour, and I love being here and watching the games. So in that respect I’m still very much a Bear.”

Honourary Life Membership is the highest accolade bestowed by the Club.

It’s awarded to ex-players who’ve made a significant contribution to Warwickshire, on and off the field, and who’ve represented the Club at international level.

Members’ Committee Chair Iftkhar Ahmed, added: “Asif is a Warwickshire great and it has been a privilege to have worked with him on the Members’ Committee.

“Asif has played an important role on the committee ensuring that the opinions and voices of our members are heard and considered as part of the Club’s decision making processes. He has continued to champion diversity and inclusivity within the Club.

“Asif’s wealth of cricketing knowledge has helped us enormously in navigating the ever changing cricketing landscape.

“He always has the best interests of the Club in mind and will be missed by us all.”
