Warwickshire’s pre-season tour of South Africa continued with another highly productive T20 double-header against Durham UCCE and Loughborough UCCE.

Taking to the field at the beautiful Coetzenburg Oval, both fixtures against university opposition provided exactly the kind of workout the coaching staff were looking for.

In the opening match of the day against Durham UCCE, the Bears batting lineup flexed their muscles to post an imposing 209/6. The innings was powered by a spectacular display of ball-striking from Vansh Jani and Jordan Thompson. Jani blasted 63 from just 33 deliveries, clearing the ropes six times, while Thompson matched his destructiveness with a rapid 65 off 35 balls, featuring seven massive sixes. Captain Alex Davies also chipped in with a solid 29 at the top of the order.

The Warwickshire bowling attack put in a disciplined shift to restrict the opposition and secure a 72-run victory. Che Simmons was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3-19 from his four overs. Oliver Hannon-Dalby also looked sharp, picking up 2-33.

The second fixture against Loughborough UCCE introduced a nearly completely different XI. After the bowling group, led by Ed Barnard (3-22) and Richard Gleeson (2-28), effectively contained the Loughborough batters, the Bears used their run chase as a pure training exercise. Despite officially securing an eight-wicket victory by passing their target in the 12th over, Warwickshire opted to bat out their full allocation of 20 overs to ensure the batting line-up gained valuable time in the middle.

The batters racked up an eventual 230/5 from their 20 overs. Ed Barnard completed a superb all-round match by top-scoring with 68 off 36 balls, an innings that included seven fours and three sixes. He was well supported by Kai Smith, who struck a rapid 52 from 24 balls, and Theo Wylie, who added a brisk 34.

The Bears finish their T20 preparation with a doubleheader against Northants on Friday, before taking the field for two simultaneously played two-day matches against Essex and Western Province to wrap up the tour.
