Edgbaston Stadium marked the 100-day countdown to the start of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 by staging a cricket tournament for local youngsters at its Indoor Centre.
The 30 youngsters – aged seven to 14 – played in teams that represented the eight participating nations as part of a ICC Champions Trophy themed day, which included an exclusive behind the scenes tour of the Edgbaston dressing rooms, VIP areas, and a chance to lift the coveted trophy.
Edgbaston is one of three ICC Champions Trophy venues and will host five matches in the tournament, including Australia v New Zealand (2 June), India v Pakistan (4 June), Pakistan v South Africa (7 June), England v Australia (10 June) and a semi-final (15 June).
Neil Snowball, Chief Executive of Warwickshire CCC, said: “Working with our city partners, Edgbaston and Birmingham have proven to be outstanding hosts for the world’s biggest cricket matches in recent years, and we’re looking forward to accommodating thousands of supporters from around the world for the ICC Champions Trophy in June.
“With exactly 100 days to go until the tournament gets underway we wanted to give cricket’s stars of the future a taste of what’s to come this summer. Today gave them an opportunity to experience what Chris Woakes, Eoin Morgan and the England team will go through on match days, but also see one of cricket’s most prestigious trophies up close.”
The junior ICC Champions Trophy tournament at Edgbaston also saw the launch of a new package for schools to obtain free tickets to Australia v New Zealand and/or Pakistan v South Africa at Edgbaston. Tickets will be allocated to schools on a first-come-first-served basis.
