Warwickshire County Cricket Club’s official charity, the Edgbaston Foundation, has announced a Community Open Day which it hopes will inspire more local youngsters to get involved in cricket.

Taking place at Edgbaston Stadium on Sunday 25 June, more than 500 cricket bats and balls will be given away at the Edgbaston Foundation Open Day to give local youngsters their first cricketing experience. There will also be cricket skills workshops, a funfair and a chance to meet the Warwickshire and Birmingham Bears players as part of an open training session.

Our emphasis is to give children with limited opportunities a chance to play cricket; by giving away the 500 bats and balls to children in the local area we will hopefully give more children the chance to play the game.

Ravi Masih, Head of Community Engagement at Warwickshire CCC, said: “This is a new format for our Open Day, which we’ve staged over the last several years. This year we wanted to open our doors and welcome the community by giving them a chance to meet the players and watch them train, whilst also supporting the work we do with our charity, the Edgbaston Foundation.

“Our emphasis is to give children with limited opportunities a chance to play cricket; by giving away the 500 bats and balls to children in the local area we will hopefully give more children the chance to play the game. We will also connect each parent to their nearest club that is part of All Stars Cricket, which is a new entry level national cricket programme for children.

“Parents simply need to register for the Edgbaston Foundation Community Day and attend on the day to receive a bat, ball and regular cricketing opportunities for their child.”

All Stars Cricket aims to give a great first experience of cricket to children aged five to eight, who can attend weekly sessions at more than 60 clubs in Birmingham and across the wider county of Warwickshire.

In addition to the activities throughout the day, Warwickshire CCC will also be fundraising for the Edgbaston Foundation, which aims to provide positive educational and sporting opportunities that help disadvantaged young people develop more life skills.
