England beat New Zealand by 115 runs in a low-scoring affair at Lord’s Cricket Ground to kick-start a summer of Test cricket that ends at Edgbaston Stadium in September.
The three-Test series against the Black Caps is followed by a three-Test series against Pakistan, with Edgbaston hosting the third and final fixture between the two sides which begins on Wednesday 9 September. England returned to Test action at The Home of Cricket, and after being put into bat, were dismissed for 140 on a testing pitch. Harry Brook was the only player to go past 20 for England, with his 71-ball 56 boosting the total.
Ollie Robinson, recalled to the side for the first time since 2023, took three wickets in his first over back, and ended New Zealand’s reply with his name on the honours board after taking five for 39 as the visitors were dismissed for 114.
Debutant Emiliano Gay, named in the squad following an impressive start to the Rothesay County Championship season with Durham, recorded a first Test half century in the second innings with 57, and alongside contributions from Ben Duckett (33), Jamie Smith (39) and Robinson (29), New Zealand were set a daunting 254 for victory.
In the fourth innings, Gus Atkinson ensured New Zealand rarely threatened the total, taking five for 30, with Robinson (two for 38) and Josh Tongue (two for 48) also making good-use of a bowler-friendly pitch.
The second Test between England and New Zealand takes place from Wednesday 17 June at The Oval.
