New signing Ethan Bamber says he’s counting down the days to his Warwickshire debut as he looks to make an instant impact in Bears’ bowling attack.

Seamer Bamber – who has almost 200 First Class wickets to his name – signed a three-year, all-formats deal at Warwickshire earlier this year.

He’s visiting Edgbaston for only the second time for a Club interview.

His first visit, in July 2023, saw him leave with career-best figures of 5/20 for Middlesex in the County Championship – the wickets of Hain, Mousley, Barnard, Bethell, and Burgess – and nine in the game.

“It was an incredible first game at Edgbaston, that’s for sure,” said the 25-year-old. “Hopefully there will be lots more wickets as a Bear. I’m sure they will come.

“I’m dead excited to get started. Bears fans can expect commitment and consistency, plus lots of enjoyment. I love my cricket and bowling. And I enjoy being part of the team and other people’s success.

“There may be a few rogue haircuts along the way so I’ll apologise for that in advance!”

Bamber first caught the cricketing world’s attention in the 2018 Under-19s World Cup. He was England’s joint leading wicket-taker in the tournament and he made his First Class debut that year, taking 28 wickets in six matches.

Last year he claimed 30 County Championship wickets in 12 games – and had a standout season in 2021 when bagging 52 wickets in just 12 matches.

He added: “I’ve been lucky in my career to have played with some phenomenal bowlers. They’ve had a great impact on me, I’ve learned new skills, and to see how they go about things in games and training has been hugely beneficial.

“It’ll be the same at Warwickshire. It was cool going into the dressing room and seeing names of players I’ve looked up to in my career like Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali. It’s intimidating, in a cool way, to be around players of that calibre next season.

“The Club, the ground and everything Warwickshire has in terms of facilities – there were lots of pull factors around my decision to move to Edgbaston. Plus on personal note, where feel I am in my career and what I want to do in the game, I think there is a role I can grow into here.

“Everything is here. This is a great opportunity for me to develop as a player and put in the performances.”

Bamber has only had a handful of T20 outings to his name but said there is a “blank slate” to push for white ball selection.

“It’s a fresh start and a chance to build my white ball profile,” he added. “I’ll be working with the bowling coaches on my white ball skills. To play T20 here would be amazing – but I’m under no illusions, it’s a superb side and I have lots of work to do.”

Warwickshire Performance Director Gavin Larsen, said: “We’re excited to see Ethan join our group and wear the Bear & Ragged Staff. We believe Ethan’s a real talent who will continue to build on an impressive resume with the ball.

“Ethan was highly courted around the game, and we’re thrilled he’s chosen to call Edgbaston home for the future.

“Ethan is a skilful bowler, and, with his age and experience, we believe he’s the perfect fit for our bowling unit going forward.”
