Olly Hannon-Dalby took two wickets on his return to the Warwickshire team on a fast-moving opening day of their Rothesay County Championship fixture with Yorkshire, and is hoping for more of the same when they return to Edgbaston Stadium tomorrow.
Having been put into bat by Yorkshire, the visitors made good use of seaming conditions to bowl Warwickshire out for 147 before ending the day 37 runs in arrears with six first innings wickets remaining.
The right-arm quick, who spent the beginning of the season on loan at Worcestershire but was recalled prior to the Bears’ fixture with the White Rose, was the pick of the Bears bowlers on the opening day after finishing with figures of 2-25 from seven overs shortly after adding 30 with Ethan Bamber in what could prove to be an important tenth wicket stand.
“There were some really good balls flying around there,” he said. “I think we’re a little disappointed. At our best, we could’ve got up to 200 there, but there’s no doubt there were some good balls in there.
“Sam Hain played brilliantly. He’s been great for us for a number of years now but I thought he played absolutely superbly.
“It was nice to hang around with Ethan at the end. I blocked them and he scored the runs, so it was nice to frustrate them a little bit. Hopefully that comes to fruition later in the game.”
Hannon-Dalby is looking ahead to the first session of day two, and says patience will be key as they look to make early inroads with Harry Brook and Jonny Bairstow currently at the crease for Yorkshire
“There’s plenty in that pitch that can trouble the batsmen, so it’s about bashing away at that forward defensive length and hopefully nicking a few early,” he added.
“It’s about being patient, hitting the top off as long as we possibly can. We could’ve maybe had a couple more today which would’ve been nice, but it’s about being patient tomorrow and hopefully bowling them out close to us.”
Play gets under way at 11:00am on day two at Edgbaston.
