The greatest batsman Pakistan has ever produced
In a rain effected first Test Match in 1992 Javed Miandad put on one of the finest batting displays ever seen by a visiting Pakistan team at Edgbaston. Javed who was captaining the Pakistan team put on an incredible 153* against a fierce England bowling attack which included Botham, Lewis and Pringle.
On a good surface at Edgbaston Javed and Saleem Malik put on a 300 partnership to set England a target of 446-4 declared. Pakistan were in a commanding position, but the challenge that faced was to bowl England out twice in just a day and a half.
Ultimately England were able to escape this tight spot and the match was drawn. Sadly this was the last century of Javed’s Test career as he retired in 1993 before pursuing a career in coaching and commentary.
There’s no doubt that Pakistan batsmen Fakhar Zaman and Azhar Ali will be looking to Miandad as a source of inspiration and hoping to emulate his monumental knock this summer. The Pakistan faithful will also be hoping for a similar result.
