Report: Bears v Falcons, Vitality Blast

Bears booked a home quarter-final in the Vitality Blast by comfortably beating Derbyshire Falcons by 44 runs at Edgbaston.

The Bears piled up 198 for two thanks to powerful half-centuries from Dan Mousley (60 not out from 44 balls), Sam Hain (52 not out from 30) and Moeen Ali (59, 32).

A modest start (21 from four overs) turned into a daunting total of which the Falcons fell well short at 154 all out from 19.2 overs. No-one passed 30 as spinners Danny Briggs (three for 24) and Jake Lintott (two for 24) dismantled the top and middle orders to take their combined T20 wicket tally to 379.

The Bears can now look forward to a home tie in the last eight – and hope to banish the hoodoo that’s seen them fall at that stage in each of the last three seasons.

Put in, the Bears made a subdued start, taking just seven runs from the first 15 balls. Mohammad Amir produced a beauty to have Alex Davies caught behind and the Bears hit only four 4s in the Powerplay which they ended on 41 for one.

Moeen than exploded into aggression.

Having meandered to 25 from 23 balls, he thundered to 50 in just another five with four sixes in five balls off Samit Patel and Alex Thomson. Pat Brown unfurled a clever slower ball which Moeen gloved behind but the impetus created by him was emphatically taken up by Mousley and Hain in an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 111 in 62 balls.

Mousley reached his eighth T20 half-century, and second in successive games, from 39 balls. Hain followed to his 33rd T20 half-century from 29 balls, one of which was smashed for arguably the most glorious six in the history of T20, over extra cover off Amir.

The Falcons enjoyed a strong Powerplay, reaching 60 for one for the loss of Luis Reece, who skied George Garton to mid on, but thereafter the scoreboard pressure took its toll.

David Lloyd lifted his first ball for six but was bamboozled and bowled by Danny Briggs’ first ball. Lintott also struck in his first over when Aneurin Donald (30, 19) sought the crowd over long off but found only Mousley just inside the boundary.

Wayne Madsen and Patel have the talent to tackle the biggest chases but when they perished in the space of four balls the Falcons’ challenge was over. Patel hit three sixes on his way to 28 but then sliced Lintott to extra cover. Hain collected that catch and was there again when Madsen lifted a drive at Briggs.

The potentially destructive Ross Whiteley fell lbw slog-sweeping at Briggs and the Falcons drifted further and further behind the required rate.

Bears bowler Craig Miles said: “It was nice to come into the side and take a couple of wickets. I haven’t played too frequently this year as we have got such a strong bowling line-up. It is a tough team to get into, so it was nice to come in and chip in with a couple of wickets and help us seal a place in the quarter-finals.

“We get such good support at Edgbaston that all the guys want to be part of that so you can be pretty down about it when you are left out, but things can change quickly in this game with injuries and form, so you have got to keep your chin up and always be ready and try to perform when the opportunity comes up.

“It was a really good win today. The pitch looked a bit tricky first up with a bit of movement and bounce but the guys read the situation brilliantly, gave themselves time and batted beautifully to build us a winning total.”

Preview: Bears v Falcons, Vitality Blast

Bears will look to cement their spot at the top of the Vitality Blast North Group – and book a home quarter final – with victory over Derbyshire Falcons.

One more win from their remaining three games will guarantee a home game in the last eight against a South Group qualifier.

Bears travel to Northants Steelbacks next Thursday 18 July (6.45pm) before finishing their group campaign at home to Leicestershire Foxes the following day (7pm).

But Mark Robinson’s men will want to confirm qualification at the earliest opportunity and bounce back from the disappointment of Derby Day defeat last time out.

The Bears squad is unchanged for the visit of sixth placed Falcons who themselves need a win to force their way into the top four. England spinner Moeen Ali is in line to make his third Blast appearance of the season for Bears having taken four wickets already since returning from T20 World Cup duty.

Alex Davies returned to captain the side against Worcestershire Rapids on Friday but was not deemed fit enough to take the gloves, with Chris Benjamin again deputising as wicketkeeper.

Bears won the reverse fixture on 16 June by seven wickets having restricted the Falcons to just 133/7. England T20 pacer Richard Gleeson took two wickets but he again misses out through injury, while Hassan Ali has not recovered from his elbow problem.

Spinner Danny Briggs continued his fine Blast form with two wickets against the Rapids. The Blast’s all-time leading wicket taker now has 19 T20 scalps this season, placing him fifth in the bowling rankings.

Bears also boast three of the top 20 Blast batters in 2024 – Sam Hain (409 runs, 58.42 ave), Dan Mousley (304, 33.77 ave) and Jacob Bethell (287, 41.00 ave) – and they’ll be hoping to power Bears one step closer to Blast Finals Day.
