Warwickshire won the toss at Repton School and having chosen to bowl against Derbyshire were rewarded with the wicket of the experienced Durston 6 in Jones’ second over.
A half century partnership for the second wicket ended when Slater 32, fell to Gordon before a partnership of 140 between Tattershall and Hughes in 25 overs put the home side in the ascendency with Hughes 57 and Tattershall 116 dominating the innings.
For Warwickshire Jones 3-57, Javid 3-49 and Adair 2-51 were the main wicket takers as Derbyshire were dismissed with two balls of the fifty overs to spare for 304.

In reply, Porterfield 5 went in the second over and Evans 25 followed, bowled by Davis in the eleventh over and when Mellor 35 and Lamb 21 both went within 5 balls with the score on 90, Warwickshire were in need of a considerable partnership to keep them in the chase.
Javid 55 and Thomason 57 provided that, adding 116 in twenty overs, but as with the earlier partnership, Javid followed Thomason’s dismissal within five deliveries and at 208-5 with less than nine overs remaining, 97 more runs were still required for victory.
Adair, Gordon and Jones were then out with just twenty five runs added to the total, leaving Rankin and Singh the unlikely task of scoring seventy two runs from just 28 balls from the last wicket to win.
Rankin 38 from 18 balls with 4 sixes and Singh 13 from 14 balls with one six, did their utmost, in an unbeaten 10th wicket partnership of fifty four from those 28 balls, but the task was too great and Derbyshire ran out victors by 17 runs to inflict a first defeat for Warwickshire in this season’s competition.
