Report: Derbyshire v Warwickshire, LV= Insurance County Championship

Day Three

Oliver Hannon-Dalby bowled Warwickshire to a crushing 191 run victory as Derbyshire’s batting folded again in the LV= Insurance County Championship match at Derby.

Faced with a target of 309, Derbyshire crumbled for the second time in the match and were bowled out for 117 before tea on the third afternoon with Hannon-Dalby claiming 4 for 24.

The home side had a chance when they bowled Warwickshire out for 155 with Michael Cohen taking 5 for 43 but a post lunch collapse condemned them to a fourth defeat of the season.

Warwickshire’s fourth victory takes them to the top of Group 1 and boosts their chances of qualifying for Division One with two games to play.

Derbyshire have yet to win a match but they were in with a slim chance of ending that run when they took the last three Warwickshire’s wickets for only 23.

Cohen and Sam Conners both got lavish swing to restrict Warwickshire’s lead to 308 but their hopes quickly faded as Hannon-Dalby removed both openers in the first five overs.

Billy Godleman edged a good delivery to first slip where Tim Bresnan took a sharp catch and Luis Reece was caught down the leg side trying to pull.

Craig Miles delivered another body blow with the last ball before lunch when Brook Guest was caught behind off an inside edge.

Wayne Madsen and Ben McDermott briefly lifted the spirits of the home supporters before the wheels came off again with four wickets falling for eight runs in five overs.

Will Rhodes brought himself on at the Racecourse End and was immediately rewarded when Madsen gave him a return catch off a leading edge and in the nex over, Hannon-Dalby returned to pin Matt Critchley lbw.

McDermott went in his next over when he pushed forward and edged low to third slip and Alex Hughes was beaten by a full, swinging delivery from Rhodes.

Warwickshire turned to the left-arm spin of Danny Briggs for the first time in the match and he struck with his third ball when Cohen pushed forward and was stumped.

Anuj Dal drove and cut Liam Norwell for two fours before he edged to third slip and a 21 point victory was sealed when Ben Aitchison skied Briggs to mid off.

Day Two

Warwickshire pace bowlers Craig Miles and Liam Norwell demolished Derbyshire before the home side hit back strongly on day two of the LV= Insurance County Championship match at Derby.

The pair shared nine wickets to skittle Derbyshire for 121 but after Warwickshire chose not to enforce the follow on, Michael Cohen took 3 for 26 as the visitors collapsed to 132 for 7, a lead of 285.

Miles took 5 for 30, including a post-lunch spell of 3 for 5 in five overs, and Norwell 4 for 24 as Derbyshire’s last eight wickets fell for 45 in 14 overs.

The day’s wicket count reached 18 despite Sam Hain’s 46 but Warwickshire are still favourites to complete a fourth victory in Group 1.

There was no sign of the mayhem that unfolded in the afternoon when Derbyshire went into lunch on 61 for 2 after Warwickshire added only two more runs to their overnight 272 for 9.

Luis Reece was lbw when he offered no shot to a Oliver Hannon-Dalby delivery that seamed back but Warwickshire tended to bowl too short and wide in the first session.

Billy Godleman and Brooke Guest took advantage until Miles had Derbyshire’s captain caught behind four overs before the interval.

Warwickshire’s bowlers adjusted their sights and ran through Derbyshire in 14 overs after lunch with wickets tumbling to a combination of good bowling and poor shot selection.

Wayne Madsen missed a drive, Ben McDermott edged to third slip pushing hard at Miles who then moved one away to have Matt Critchley caught behind.

Norwell swept aside the lower order, having Brooke Guest caught behind and Anuj Dal snared at first slip before Alex Hughes edged into Michael Burgess’s gloves as he pushed forward.

Ben Aitchison gave Tim Bresnan another catch at first slip and although Norwell speared the hat-trick ball wildly down the leg side, Derbyshire were still four short of the follow-on target of 125 when Cohen became Burgess’s fifth victim.

Warwickshire’s decision to bat again looked questionable when Will Rhodes played around Sam Conners and Pieter Malan bagged a pair when he was caught down the leg side off Cohen.

Derbyshire sensed an opening when Rob Yates was bowled driving at Reece but Hain and Matt Lamb restored order until another clatter of wickets gave the home side a glimmer of hope.

Day One

Sam Hain and Michael Burgess led Warwickshire’s recovery on an evenly contested opening day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match against Derbyshire at Derby.

Hain made 77 from 161 balls and Burgess 71 off 134 after Sam Conners reduced the visitors to 105 for 4 in the Group 1 game at the Incora County Ground.

The 22-year-old fast bowler ended with 4 for 45 from 16 overs and Derbyshire claimed three wickets with the second new ball to limit Warwickshire to 272 for 9 at the close.

Cloud cover and a muggy atmosphere probably persuaded Billy Godleman to put Warwickshire in and he was rewarded with two wickets in the first seven overs.

Conners had struck with the first ball of the match at Worcester last week and he removed Will Rhodes and Pieter Malan in consecutive overs.

The Warwickshire captain miscued a pull which lobbed to mid off in the fifth over and Conners then removed Malan’s off stump with an inswinging yorker.

Conners almost had a third in his sixth over when Rob Yates drove to mid on where a diving Luis Reece got both hands to the ball but could not cling on.

The light was poor enough for the floodlights to be switched on and Yates and Hain needed some luck to get through to lunch at 89 for 2.

Yates might have thought he had done the hard work but he was out for 37 in the fourth over of the afternoon session when Conners got some late away movement to have him caught at second slip.

Matt Lamb got away with a pull that just evaded mid on but when he repeated the shot against Conners, Reece held the top edge running across behind the bowler.

Hain now had to rebuild for a second time and with Burgess, added 74 in 24 overs before he dabbed Reece to second slip.

Burgess played fluently to reach 50 from 89 balls and with Tim Bresnan, took Warwickshire to a first batting point before Alex Hughes nipped one away to have Bresnan smartly caught at slip by Wayne Madsen.

A second was secured before Burgess was caught behind off an inside edge driving at Michael Cohen, the first of three late wickets that earned Derbyshire maximum bowling points.
