Report: Somerset v Warwickshire, One Day Cup
Somerset 161-3 (Learoyd 70*) beat Warwickshire 160 (Surenkumar 58, Barnes 4-24, Harris 4-32) by 7 wickets.
Warwickshire suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Somerset in the Metro Bank One Day Cup Women’s competition at the Maer Ground, Exmouth, after a strong position with the bat was undone by a middle-order collapse.
After being put into bat, the Bears made an excellent start and had reached 151-2 in the 26th over. Amu Surenkumar led the way with a well-crafted 58 from 72 balls, striking nine fours, while Georgia Redmayne contributed 32 from 32 deliveries in an opening partnership of 65.
Surenkumar continued to score freely after Redmayne fell to the first ball of Liv Barnes’ spell, reaching her half-century from 53 deliveries as Warwickshire passed 100 inside 18 overs. Meg Austin added 17 before being trapped lbw by Niamh Holland, while Katie George made 31 from 33 balls as the visitors advanced to 146-2.
However, Somerset’s spinners transformed the contest. Surenkumar’s dismissal sparked a collapse as leg-spinner Lola Harris and left-arm spinner Barnes shared eight wickets between them. Harris returned career-best List A figures of 4-32, while Barnes claimed career-best figures of 4-24 as Warwickshire were dismissed for 160 in 33.3 overs, losing their final eight wickets for nine runs.
Somerset’s chase began with the run out of Bex Odgers, while Alexa Stonehouse removed Sophie Luff for 34 and Georgia Davis accounted for Niamh Holland. But Australia A batter Anika Learoyd anchored the reply with an unbeaten 70 from 58 balls, sharing a fourth-wicket stand of 75 with Jess Hazell, who contributed 32.
Learoyd reached her half-century from 47 deliveries as Somerset chased down their target with 28.2 overs to spare, securing a seven-wicket victory and a bonus point win.
