Day 1
Rain ruined the opening day of Warwickshire’s Second team friendly against Somerset at Portland Road, after the visitors had been invited to bat first, facing just for four balls before the weather closed in forcing an early close with Somerset 37—1.
Mark Adair picked up the wicket, when the experienced Myburgh edged to Porterfield at third slip for 17.
Day 2
With the players making an early start to the second day, Byrom and Bartlett 44, added a further 102 in the opening 70 minutes until Byrom 74, cut Adair to Hain at backward point and six balls later. Bartlett then played round a full delivery from Matt Lamb.
These wickets led to two more tumbling on the same total when Allenby 0 and Davies 0 quickly followed to Adair as Somerset had a mini-collapse to 139-5, having been 139-1 only 15 minutes earlier.
Hose and Rouse batted solidly to go to lunch without further loss and then proceeded to dominate the Warwickshire attack for much of the following two sessions. Hose was first to complete his century and then Rouse, as the sixth wicket pair added 306 runs in 63 overs.
Hose in a particularly aggressive mood, scored 136 of his 194 in fours and sixes.
Adair finally dismissed Rouse for 123, his fifth wicket and when Singh prevented Hose reaching his double century, Somerset finally declared with a huge 513-7 from 104.1 overs with Adair taking 5-108.
There was time for five overs before stumps, when Warwickshire were 10-0.
Day 3
Wrwickshire’s batsmen endured a tough start on the third morning as Umeed 4 and Porterfield 11 both went early to van Meekeeren, while Hain 26, Lamb 29 and Javid 20 made starts but all fell to Davey.
Mellor 57 and Thomason 37 offered some lord-order resistance, helped by Adair 31 and Poysden 25, while Panayi’s unbeaten 30 helped Warwickshire reach 287 from almost 89 overs play.
With a first innings lead of 226 Somerset batted again, but lost Myburgh,20, Bartlett 16 and Green 3 before stumps when they had reached 69-3 with Josh Poysden taking two of the three Somerset wickets.
Day 4
Somerset batted on for a further 38 overs on the final day, extending their lead to a massive 422 before finally declaring on 196-8 after an unbeaten half-century from Jim Allenby.
Josh Poysden, wicketless in Somerset’s first innings, closed with five wickets and with little chance of a successful chase, Warwickshire reached 172-5 from 39 overs when the players shook hands with the match drawn.
Ed Pollock made 72 and Ateeq Javid 28, after the batting order was swapped around to give some players time in the middle
