Warwickshire 284-9 (50 overs) beat Yorkshire 279 (49.4 overs) by 5 runs at Knowle & Dorridge CC

Warwickshire 2 points      Yorkshire 0 points

Andrew Umeed skippering the Warwickshire 2nd XI won the toss and chose to bat and then played a match winning innings after the early losses of Mellor and Banks had left Warwickshire 16-2 in the fifth over.

Umeed and Lamb’s third wicket partnership of 165 in 30 overs saw both men complete half centuries with Lamb making 63 from 83 deliveries with eight fours while Umeed edged Warner to wicketkeeper Birkhead when just two runs short of a century. He had faced 117 balls with six fours and three sixes.

Brookes and Panayi’s ninth wicket partnership of forty two from 26 balls helped raise the total to 284-9 from the fifty overs after the middle order had failed to capitalise on the base established by Umeed and Lamb.

In reply, Yorkshire lost Geldart off the last ball of Jones’ opening over but a second wicket partnership of sixty nine between Gibson and Hussain got the visitors off to a strong start before Singh got Gibson’s wicket for 48 and Jones then followed up with Waite and Callis in consecutive overs.

Wickets continued to tumble and at 164-8 in the 33rd over it looked as if Warwickshire were going to gain a comfortable victory before a ninth wicket response from Carver and Barnes 58 in nine overs took Yorkshire up to 230-9.

Carver 66* with four fours and three sixes, continued to bat with confidence and Yorkshire were within six runs of victory with three balls remaining when Panayi bowled Warner 19 to end a last wicket stand that had brought forty nine runs and almost an unlikely victory.

The win was Warwickshire’s second in the Trophy, after two successive defeats, with Jones 3-59, Singh 2-81 and Panayi 2-37 the main wicket takers, while Adair and Brookes each took one wicket.
