Report: Warwickshire v Durham, Friendly

Day Three

Due to heavy rain, the match was abandoned at 10.30am.

First Team Coach Mark Robinson will be pleased his side got 174 overs in the legs, with 84 of those batting innings leading to four unbeaten half-centuries.

The Bears attention now turns to Nottinghamshire, who arrive at Edgbaston for a two-day friendly on Tuesday 30 March.

Day Two

Will Rhodes, Matt Lamb, Sam Hain and Adam Hose all struck unbeaten half-centuries as Warwickshire enjoyed their first batting innings of pre-season.

Closing on 313/5, the quartet all retired not out as the Bears punished the Durham attack with fifty five fours and one six in 84 overs.

Opener Rhodes led the way, departing at lunch on 63* from 90 balls (10 fours) with Lamb joining him in the pavilion on 60* (90 balls, 14 fours) during the second session.

Hain, who struck his 50 just before Tea, made way shortly after the restart with a stylish 70* (100 balls, 15 fours). Hose then followed the trio on 55* (79 balls, nine fours, one six) after bringing up his half-century with a maximum of spinner Scott Borthwick.

At close of play, Dan Mousley (28*) and Michael Burgess (14*) remained unbeaten. Opener Rob Yates was the only victim, edging Ben Carse to first-slip for ten.

Day One

Warwickshire took five wickets to kick-start their preparations for the new LV= Insurance County Championship campaign.

Hosting Durham on day one of a three-day friendly, Dan Mousley took two late wickets with Tim Bresnan, Will Rhodes and Danny Briggs adding one a piece.

The visitors, who were coming off the back of a two-day friendly at Yorkshire, closed on 286/6 with Scott Borthwick retiring after an excellent 102 (146 balls, 19 fours, one six).

For new First Team Coach Mark Robinson it was a strong start for what’s to come in 2021 as the Bears were rewarded late in the day following a disciplined 90 overs.

Eight bowlers were able to get overs in the legs with Mousley removing Jack Burham (caught and bowled for 20) and Ned Eckersley (bowled for 0) in the 86th and 90th over respectively.

Bresnan was the first to strike after lunch, forcing Lees to edge to Michael Burgess for 49 and putting an end to a strong 102 partnership with Michael Jones.

David Bedingham was next to depart by finding Burgess’ gloves off Rhodes for 21, whilst Briggs trapped Jones LBW for 78.

Preview: Warwickshire v Durham, Friendly

First Team Coach Mark Robinson is excited to see his side embark on their ‘next stage of preparation’ as Warwickshire face Durham in a three-day friendly starting on Wednesday.

The Bears host Durham with both sides looking to replicate a County Championship style format.

Play will start at 10.30am with 90 overs scheduled to be bowled each day. Lunch will be taken at 12.30pm, Tea at 3.50pm and the expected close of play is 5.30pm.

March weather can be temperamental, but Robinson believes there’s plenty of opportunities for the Bears to get valuable game time ahead of the season opener on the 8th April.

“The wicket looks great. We have a top-class groundsman,” said Robinson.

“Ideally, you’d play a game as properly as you can, but at this time of year, you’re mindful about giving opportunities and trying to get people in the middle and overs in the legs.

“We’re just happy to get out and it’s always different in the first game when you don’t have nets all around you. That’s the next part of the preparation getting out of your head and into the battle.

“The lads have worked really hard and they’ve done everything I’ve asked them to do. We’re at the next stage by taking away the comfort blanket and preparing for what’s to come on the 8th of April.”
