Glamorgan, 341 for 8, lead Warwickshire by 341 runs.
Warwickshire fought back strongly with the second new ball after Ben Kellaway’s century had guided Glamorgan to 341 for eight on the opening day of the Rothesay County Championship match at Edgbaston
Glamorgan, asked to bat first, slipped to 0 for 2 inside five overs before recovering to 341 for eight by the close thanks largely to Kellaway’s 139 from 242 balls, featuring 18 fours and a six. His third first-class century helped rebuild the innings after the early setbacks before Warwickshire hit back strongly with the second new ball.
The 22-year-old shared a 194-run third-wicket partnership in 52 overs with captain Kiran Carlson (85 from 156), although Warwickshire responded late in the day through Olly Hannon-Dalby (three for 46) and Ethan Bamber (three for 61).
Glamorgan endured a difficult start with both openers dismissed without scoring. Asa Tribe edged Hannon-Dalby behind after chasing a wide delivery, while Zain-ul-Hassan was caught behind off an excellent outswinger from Bamber.
Warwickshire made full use of the early conditions and briefly threatened to take complete control. Hannon-Dalby and Bamber bowled with control and discipline, but Kellaway and Carlson countered calmly to rebuild the innings. They guided Glamorgan to 91 for two at lunch before continuing their partnership through the afternoon session, Carlson reaching his fifty from 95 balls and Kellaway from 100.
Even after the ball softened, Warwickshire’s seam attack maintained pressure, with Hannon-Dalby and Beau Webster delivering several tidy spells. The breakthrough eventually came via spin in the 56th over when Carlson advanced to Dan Mousley and inside-edged onto his pad, the ball looping to slip.
Kellaway continued to anchor the innings, reaching his century from 185 deliveries before Colin Ingram departed immediately after tea, edging Ed Barnard. Kellaway and Sean Dickson (33 from 56) then added a further 73 runs.
Warwickshire enjoyed the better of the closing stages with the second new ball, Rob Yates taking three catches at second slip to remove Dickson, Timm van der Gugten and eventually Kellaway, who fell to a lifting delivery from Hannon-Dalby. When Chris Cooke was trapped lbw late in the day, the hosts had pulled things back well to leave the match evenly balanced heading into day two.
