Report: Warwickshire v Nottinghamshire, Friendly

Day 2

Warwickshire enjoyed another strong day on the final day of the pre-season fixture with Nottinghamshire in the Edgbaston sunshine.

Having bowled for the majority of the first day, homegrown Bears Rob Yates and Matt Lamb moved the Bears to within six runs of the Nottinghamshire total, in the morning session before the latter was run out for 40.

Moseley batsman Yates continued to impress and made 87 from 155 balls with 13 fours, before edging Notts seamer Fletcher to Hameed at third slip.

With all-rounder Bresnan making 65 and Henry Brookes contributing 34 runs, the Bears finished their innings finished on 291 for 10 with a lead of 160.

Having taken 11 wickets in Notts’ allocated batting time yesterday, Bears fast bowler Craig Miles took one wicket and also contributed a direct hit run out as the visitors reached 106 for two in their second innings.

Next up for the Bears is the three-day friendly versus Leeds/Bradford UCCE at Weetwood CC, starting on Saturday 3 April.

Day 1

Warwickshire enjoyed a strong day with ball and bat on the opening day of the First Team friendly with Nottinghamshire on a glorious sunny day at Edgbaston.

With temperatures reaching 20 degrees Celsius, Warwickshire dismissed the visitors within the allocated 60 overs of pre-season bowling time for 131 and reached 93 for one at the close.

Notts openers Slater and Hammed made a solid opening start by guiding Notts to 32 without loss. However, Bears all-rounder Tim Bresnan made the breakthrough with the left-handed Slater nicking off to the safe hands of Academy wicket-keeper Vikai Kelley.

Fast bowler Liam Norwell followed up by removing Hameed and Clarke to leave the visitors at 36 for three and the introduction of slow left-arm recruit Danny Briggs brought two more wickets for the Bears before the lunch break, with Nottinghamshire 76 for five.

Immediately after lunch, captain Will Rhodes entered the attack and bowled both Moores and Mullaney. Paceman Henry Brookes removed Patterson-White with another catch for Kelley and the innings from Nottinghamshire was wrapped up by two further wickets for Bresnan and another for Briggs.

The visitors finished their day of batting at 131 for 11 wickets with Bresnan and Briggs sharing three wickets each, both for 18 runs.

In response, Warwickshire skipper Will Rhodes was the only wicket to fall, for 19, after an opening stand of 60 with Academy graduate Rob Yates, who reached 55 not out at close with Matt Lamb on 17 not out.

At the Edgbaston Community Sports Ground, Warwickshire Second XI made 225 for six, underpinned by an unbeaten 89 from Ed Pollock and 49 from Dan Mousley.

In response, Notts reached 121 for seven with three wickets taken by seamer Olly Hannon-Dalby, two by Manraj Johal and one each for George Garrett and Ethan Brookes.

Preview: Warwickshire v Nottinghamshire, Friendly

Warwickshire will be looking to build on their LV= Insurance County Championship preparations when they take on Nottinghamshire in a two-day double-header.

Two games are planned simultaneously with 12 players expected to be at Edgbaston and 12 at the Edgbaston Community Sports Ground.

The opportunity to be able to get overs in all of the players legs excites Mark Robinson and the First Team Coach will be looking for his side to continue their upward curve after a pleasing showing against Durham.

“We’ll mix and match players a little bit to try and give them the opportunity,” Robinson said after the Durham friendly. “It’s the next step really as we’ve got our first game on the eighth and we’ve had our first game on grass which is always a bit strange.

“Gary Barwell and the boys have given us great tracks and the chance to use the wicket we’ve just played on during the nets on Monday.

“It’s, as I say, about getting battle hardened and used to the consequence – whether that’s an umpire at the other end giving a dismissal and deciding whether you’re going to face the next ball.

“Everybody will be a little more worked and will know what’s needed and where they are. I’m really enjoying what we’re doing at the moment.”
