Yorkshire 386-6 v Warwickshire

Warwickshire face work to do after Yorkshire reached 386 for six on day one of their Rothesay County Championship fixture at Scarborough.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Bears were made to toil as Will Luxton compiled a maiden first-class century, scoring 167 from 261 balls to anchor the hosts’ innings.

The 23-year-old shared partnerships of 102, 90, 94 and 74 with Adam Lyth (29), Sam Whiteman (55), Matthew Revis (40) and Jonny Bairstow (49 not out) respectively as Yorkshire built a strong position.

The two sides came into the match separated by only 15 points in a tightly packed Division One table, with Warwickshire in third place and Yorkshire eighth.

On a surface offering some assistance for the seamers through bounce and swing, Warwickshire captain Ed Barnard opted to field first. However, Yorkshire recovered well after an early breakthrough.

Barnard struck first when Lyth was caught behind for 29 with the score on 102, before Luxton and Yorkshire-born Australian Whiteman added 90 for the second wicket. Whiteman, returning after missing Yorkshire’s last three Championship matches and part of the Vitality Blast through injury, made 55 before being stumped down the leg side advancing to spin debutant Manav Suthar.

A brief rain interruption followed before Barnard claimed his second wicket. James Wharton fell for 13 when Alex Davies produced an excellent one-handed diving catch behind the stumps, leaving Yorkshire 209 for three.

Luxton reached his century from 182 balls shortly before tea, bringing up the landmark with a slog-swept six off Suthar. The right-hander had previously scored only 130 runs across the County Championship and Vitality Blast combined this season.

Yorkshire went into the interval on 238 for three and continued to progress through a 94-run fourth-wicket stand between Luxton and Revis. Revis was eventually bowled by Ethan Bamber with the second new ball after making 40.

Bairstow then provided late momentum, including a six off Bamber over long-on, while Luxton advanced to 150 from 282 deliveries.

Warwickshire enjoyed some success late in the day. Suthar trapped Luxton lbw attempting a sweep, while Ben Cliff was caught at first slip off Oliver Hannon-Dalby in successive overs.

Barnard and Suthar both finished with two wickets, while Ethan Bamber and Oliver Hannon-Dalby claimed one apiece as Warwickshire made further inroads before the close. The Bears will look to make early breakthroughs on day two as they seek to limit Yorkshire’s first-innings advantage.
