There wasn't much time to rest in 1994.

Whilst, Brian Lara reached mortality with his 501 not out on the 6 June at Edgbaston, striking the new first-class record in 427 deliveries with 62 fours and ten sixes, other eyes were on a different prize.

Lara’s fantastic innings – which had passed Hanif Mohammad’s 499 – came on the final day in a County Championship draw with Durham.

24 hours later the Bears would be in the field at The Oval, taking on a strong Surrey team in the Benson & Hedges semi-final.

Legs and minds were tired, more so for Lara who spent most of the time between matches doing TV and radio interview, and there would have been no shame if the Bears fell short. Thankfully, losing wasn’t in their DNA.
