Wicketkeeper batter Kai Smith says Michael Burgess’ shock retirement has presented an unexpected opportunity behind the stumps – and it’s one he has ambitions on filling.
Smith announced himself to Bears fans in spectacular style during the One Day Cup Quarter Final in August when he smashed 130 off 104 balls to seal a stunning victory over rivals Worcestershire.
It was a display that earned the then 19-year-old (he recently turned 20) the Club’s Performance of the Season award.
Next year was always going to be a big one for Smith – who averages 35.00 in 23 List A games to date – but even more so following Burgess’ decision to step away from cricket.
He said: “It was sad to see Burgy leave. It was big surprise and his are big gloves to fill. He’s been Warwickshire’s red ball keeper for several years and his stats speak for itself.
“However, it opens an opportunity to stake a claim for that spot in the County Championship behind the stumps. I want to put in performances with bat and gloves and grab the opportunity with both hands.
“Davo (Alex Davies) obviously keeps for us in the Blast and we’ve just signed Tom Latham who keeps for New Zealand! So there’s strong competition.
“I’ve been doing a lot of work with Davo on my keeping skills. If I put in consistent performances hopefully an opportunity will arise to play across multiple formats next summer and to make my First Class debut.
“I want to make a name for myself in 2025, to slowly climb the ladder to more performances and bigger things.”
Smith heads to South Africa soon for three months’ winter cricket with Rondebosch Cricket Club and is focused on being in peak form and fitness ahead of the 4 April season start.
He added: “It’s great to be back in training and gelling with the guys. I’ve had a first hit in a while and done some keeping practice.
“We’re being put through our paces. Some early starts in the gym, running, bike work and rowing. It’s full on but working hard will put us in good stead for next year and it’s also very rewarding.
“It’ll be good to link up with Rondebosch and play some competitive cricket rather than being confirmed to the nets in the winter. We’ve got pre-season tour in March, and before you know it the season will be here. I want to be ready.”
