Amu Surenkumar was delighted that Warwickshire Women ‘found a way’ to win against Yorkshire, as they made it back-to-back victories in the Metro Bank One Day Cup on Saturday.
The Bears won for the second time in the space of four days to consolidate fourth place in the table ahead of a month-long break, with T20 cricket set to take centre stage before the competition’s return in June.
Surenkumar hit a vital 45 at the top of the order in the Bears’ three-wicket win at Scarborough Cricket Club.
There were also telling contributions from Meg Austin (30), Abbey Freeborn (36), Chloe Brewer (56), Nat Wraith (20) and Mary Taylor (22*), as the strength of the Bears’ batting line-up came to the fore.
“We’re very pleased we won, especially after winning the last game too, and it puts us in a good position heading into the T20s,” Surenkumar said.
“We know that we bat deep and it was great to show that today. We made it tricky though.
“We had a spread field and didn’t really utilise that, but good teams find a way and we found a way today.”
Warwickshire, bowling first, were able to restrict Yorkshire to 238 despite the brilliance of Jess Jonassen, who top-scored with a 155-ball century before being dismissed by Georgia Davis (three for 43) for 110.
Davis was well supported with the ball, as Hannah Baker (three for 45), Taylor (two for 53) and Phoebe Brett (two for 31) all chipped.
Surenkumar says on a good batting pitch and with a fast outfield, the Bears’ bowlers deserved credit for sticking to their task.
“We felt Yorkshire’s score was under par,” she added. “It was a very good wicket and a quick outfield.
“We felt they should have scored another 40 or 50 runs, but that’s kudos to our bowlers who bowled very well and fielding was excellent.
“Our chase also showed the batting depth in our squad and we’re very pleased to win.”
The Metro Bank One Day Cup returns on Saturday 13 June, with the Bears entertaining Lancashire at Portland Road.
