
On Sunday, during the fourth day of the third and deciding test match between England and New Zealand, England captain Ben Stokes announced that he would be retiring from international cricket at the end of the series.
Stokes will go down as one of England’s greats, having played a whole host of match-winning innings’ and having taken key wickets at crucial times in big series’ at home and abroad.

102* vs Australia (ICC Champions Trophy, 2017)
Ben Stokes’ finest England performance at Edgbaston came in the ICC Champions Trophy against Australia. Chasing a revised DLS target after rain, England were under pressure before Stokes took control with a magnificent unbeaten 102 from 109 balls. His innings, featuring 13 fours and two sixes, anchored a match-winning partnership of 159 with Eoin Morgan and secured England’s place in the semi-finals, while eliminating their oldest rivals from the tournament.
4-33 vs India (2nd Test, July 2025)
Leading England as captain, Stokes produced one of his finest spells at Edgbaston. His figures of 4-33 helped to wrestle momentum back in England’s favour, and would end up being his best Test bowling figures at the ground. England then successfully chased down a mammoth 378 for victory in the final innings for a famous win, and one of the defining results of Stokes’ captaincy.

With England’s World Cup campaign hanging in the balance, Stokes delivered when his side needed him most. Facing an unbeaten India at Edgbaston, he struck 79 from just 54 balls, sharing a crucial 70-run partnership with Jonny Bairstow after the opener’s century. Stokes’ innings, which included six fours and three sixes, lifted England to 337-7, a total they defended to win by 31 runs. The victory revived England’s semi-final hopes and proved a pivotal moment on their journey to becoming world champions.
