Alex Thomson feels that he is moving in the right direction as a first-team player after contributing with both bat and ball for Warwickshire in the Royal London Cup group stage.
The Bears’ 50-over campaign has been disappointing with their qualification hopes already over with two games remaining following a five-wicket defeat at Derbyshire on Tuesday.
But the performances of spin-bowling all-rounder Thomson have been a big bright spot. In six innings with the bat, he has been dismissed for less than 30 only once, despite having often gone in with early wickets having fallen. With the ball he has settled more with each game and bowled with a composure which suggests he could have a big part to play alongside fellow spinners Jeetan Patel and Ashton Agar in this year’s Vitality Blast.

“We have got a fantastic environment at Warwickshire where young players are made to feel welcome and part of things. I certainly feel very welcome in the dressing-room and that can only help you relax and perform.
“Then being out there on the field, you experience the exposure and pressure and get accustomed to it and it slowly starts to become the norm which is hopefully the direction I’m moving in. We have still got a couple of games left so I am hoping to continue that.”
Thomson will aim to make a further impact in the final two group games, at home to Lancashire on Saturday, when there will be a bumper crowd at Edgbaston for the Community Fun Day, and then away to Leicestershire next Monday.
“They are frustrating times for us at the moment,” he said. “We are a young side who are going to have our ups and downs but we have to learn quickly.
“We have got two more opportunities to put in solid performances and, after Tuesday’s result, the boys will be chomping at the bit to get back out there and really show the fans and coaching staff what we are capable of.
“It will be a good crowd for Community Day with loads going on so there is a great opportunity for the players to excel and that’s what we are looking to do.”
