Gerhard graduated from the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, with a degree in physiotherapy and moved to the West Midlands in 1999.
It was initially a one-year visa to work in UK hospitals. Twenty-five years later, he remains in Birmingham and is an “adopted Brummie”.
