Warwickshire County Cricket Club has added fast bowlers James Wainman and Bailey Wightman to the squad following the news that Liam Norwell will miss the remainder of the 2019 season.

Norwell has now undergone an operation on the left hamstring that he tore in the Specsavers County Championship victory over Yorkshire and he will now work with the club’s medical team on his rehabilitation programme.

“We’re devastated for Liam that’s he’s been ruled out for the rest of the season after making such a great impact since coming into the side, with 14 wickets in four games,” said Warwickshire’s Sport Director Paul Farbrace.

“He’s an excellent character who won’t get down by this latest setback, but instead put every effort into coming back stronger for us in 2019.”

Left-arm seamer Wainman (26) has come through the Yorkshire pathway and has made four List A and two T20 appearances for the white rose. He has registered with the Bears for the next month with the option to extend.

Leamington Spa-born Wightman – a right-arm fast bowler – has been based in Adelaide, Australia, since the age of nine, but returned in 2018 to play club cricket for Bradford & Bingley in Yorkshire and Minor Counties cricket for Cheshire.

“James has been on the road with the first team for the last two Championship games, whilst Bailey has already played in the second team,” added Farbrace.

“Both players have made an immediate impression, with James a left-armer who gets good movement and Bailey offering good pace and bounce.

“With the away run of Championship matches to continue over the next three weeks, James and Bailey could have an important role to play for us against Kent, Hampshire and Essex.”
