The Unicorns won the toss and chose to field at Coventry & North Warwickshire and came up against Sam Hain in irrepressible form, opening the innings and making a superb 118 from 143 deliveries, including four sixes and seven fours as his innings provided the backbone to Warwickshire’s competitive 258-9 from their fifty overs.
Despite losing Umeed and Javid cheaply, after being inserted by Nottinghamshire, half centuries from Coleman and Webb laid the foundation for Lamb 46, Thomason 42 and Jones 53 to extend the Warwickshire innings to 354 from almost eighty nine overs in the first 2nd XI Championship match of the season.
The introduction of Poysden saw the Unicorns collapse against a spell of accurate and destructive spin bowling
Umeed 8 fell to a good catch at mid-on by Gouldstone off Stephens having shared in an opening partnership of forty six with the aggressive Hain.
Evans 25 and Coleman 20 looked to keep the board moving along but Evans was late on a ball that took his off stump while Coleman may have been unlucky to be adjudged lbw when in full flow.
Mellor and Javid went cheaply, but after Hain had been caught at long-on, Thomason 40 and Jones 24* gave the innings a late flourish before closing on 258-9. Maxfield 3-49 was the Unicorns most successful bowler.
In the Unicorns’ reply, Hannon-Dalby and Wright took early wickets removing both openers, Maxfield and Kelsall for just five in the opening five overs, before Whittock 35 and Wood added sixty three in twenty overs for the visitors, before Javid dismissed Whittock.
The introduction of Poysden saw the Unicorns collapse against a spell of accurate and destructive spin bowling as the left-armer took 6-42 from less than nine overs, with only Wood 88, offering real resistance, being ninth out for eighty one before the innings closed to Poysden’s next delivery for 191 with twenty eight deliveries to spare.
