Warwickshire are heading to South Africa to fine tune their preparations for the 2023 season.
A travelling party of 25 players and coaches will fly to Cape Town for 13 days of training and matches.
Flying out on 8 March, the squad will head to Stellenbosch for three days on the practice field, before heading west to their base near Newlands. The Bears plan to play four T20s plus four days of red ball action.
“Cape Town has fantastic facilities and we’re really looking forward to building on our winter programme,” said First Team Coach Mark Robinson. “This opportunity will allow us to get on grass and, not only practice, but play some competitive games.”
In previous years, the squad have travelled abroad to Abu Dhabi (2018) and La Manga (2020), whilst in 2019 an indoor facility was erected on the old number one nets, prior to a batch of friendlies.
There is no rhyme or reason to pre-season with each club operating differently, but for Robinson the opportunity to practice elsewhere is a major plus.
“After a long winter the opportunity to get the whole squad away from all the distractions and in the sun is an invaluable one,” added the 56-year-old. “It’s something to look forward to, and build towards, and it will be especially important in helping the new players gel.
“We’re incredibly lucky here at Edgbaston, but it can almost feel like cabin fever at times. Everyone has worked really hard since the end of last season and I believe this tour will stand us in good stead ahead of season our opener at Somerset.”
