Warwickshire County Cricket Club has confirmed that Second XI Coach Ian Westwood will lead First Team coaching duties during the group stages of this year’s Royal London Cup, standing in for Jim Troughton who has been appointed Assistant Coach for Birmingham Phoenix men’s team in The Hundred.

Westwood will continue to be supported in the eight group games of the 50-over competition by Bowling Coach Graeme Welch.

“I’ve been very impressed with Ian and he has the makings of an excellent coach,” said Warwickshire’s Sport Director Paul Farbrace.

“He played an important role in helping Rob Yates, Dan Mousley, George Garrett and Ethan Brookes step up from the Academy to the professional ranks last year and he has made good progress with the Second XI, where he has further supported the development of several other promising young players.”

We’re committed to giving opportunities to our coaches, as well as the players, to be the best that they can.

Westwood transitioned from the first team playing squad into coaching in 2017 and he was initially appointed as Development Coach before a promotion to Second XI Coach last year.

“We’re committed to giving opportunities to our coaches, as well as the players, to be the best that they can,” added Farbrace. “With Jim benefitting from this excellent opportunity to work on a premier short-form tournament, it’s right that Ian can grow as a coach by leading on first team matters with the support of Graeme and Tony.”

In addition to Troughton, four Bears players will be involved in The Hundred with Chris Woakes, Adam Hose and Henry Brookes all part of the Birmingham Phoenix squad and Ed Pollock drafted to Manchester Originals.

Warwickshire’s Royal London Cup marks the return of men’s first team county cricket at the Edgbaston Community Sports Ground, formerly the Mitchells & Butlers Ground on Portland Road, with Northamptonshire and Leicestershire visiting respectively on Wednesday 22 and Tuesday 28 July.

Ticket and Member information for all Royal London Cup games will be confirmed in the coming weeks.
