Chris Woakes has been named as one of Wisden’s five cricketers of the year after an incredible 12 months with club and country, having played a central role in England’s Test and one-day teams.

This was the year Chris Woakes announced himself as an international-class all-rounder.

Wisden notes, “This was the year Chris Woakes announced himself as an international-class all-rounder. He took 26 wickets at 16 apiece in four Tests against Pakistan – only Abdul Qadir has managed more in a series between the sides – and contributed regular runs down the order. His unbeaten 95 in the one-day international against Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge was a world record for a batsman at No8 or below.”

Joining Woakes are English duo Ben Duckett and Toby Roland-Jones, while Pakistan’s 42-year-old Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq and 40-year-old batsman Younis Khan complete the list. India batsman Virat Kohli, 28, was named leading cricketer in the world, while Australia’s Ellyse Perry, 26, was the world’s leading women’s cricketer.

The coveted awards, which began in 1889, are a central feature of the annual Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack.
