Women's One-Day Cup Report: Warwickshire Women vs Lancashire Women

The warm weather broke today to give way for downpours and showers soaking the pitch at the Edgbaston Community Sports Ground as Warwickshire Women played their last ever 50-over one-day game against Lancashire Women.

Coming from the high of last week’s victory against Surrey, but without winning run scorer Amy Jones, the Bears were on a hunt for another win. It wasn’t meant to be, however, and an unfortunate finish to the one-day season followed as Lancashire reached their target of 58, easily winning by 9 wickets (DLS).

Losing the toss, Warwickshire Women were put into bat first by Lancashire with the prospect of rain ever present. But that didn’t matter as the Bears got off to a great start with opener Ria Fackrell smashing the first ball of the day away for four. Although following a drop catch of Fackrell in the fifth over, the captain, Marie Kelly, was caught next ball by Laura Marshall for 1 (13).

Gwenan Davies stepped up to the crease and despite a short rain break in the ninth over, the total soared. A 64-run partnership for Fackrell and Davies increased the runs to 69-1 until another wicket fell; Davies (23) bowled by Emma Lamb (8-0-25-2).

The Drinks break at 25 overs, when the Bears were 80-3, saw the heavens open for the first time of the day and play was stopped for an early tea. Due to the length of the downpour and damp patches on the edge of the square and bowler’s run-up, the remaining overs left in the day were reduced to 39 a piece. This meant Warwickshire had 14 overs to set a significant target for the Red Roses to reach.

Fackrell and Kathryn Bryce went out with bang adding 68 runs to the overall score before Bryce’s wicket fell to an impressive over-the-head catch at long on by Hannah Jones (8-0-28-0) for 45 from 42. Not out on 65 (130), Fackrell helped secure a total of 148-4 at the changeover, with some superb shots over the boundary line.

Just as Lancashire were about to come out to bat, the heaven’s opened once again causing the match to be delayed for a further two hours as the Umpire’s inspected the pitch for any signs of water and potential health and safety risks.

Eventually, the game was back underway with a revised target for Lancashire of 58 required from 10 overs, due to DLS. Bowlers were only allowed to bowl two overs each and Issy Wong (2-0-19-0) stepped up to stop the Red Roses.

A tense finish to the game saw Liz Russell (1-0-8-0), Bethan Ellis (1-0-11-0) and Georgia Davis all tried to hold back Lancashire as they raced towards the 58 run target in only 5.5 overs. Davis (1.4-0-19-1) was able to take a main wicket for the Bears in the 6th over, breaking the Lamb (24) and Eve Jones (27*) partnership as they pushed Lancashire to 52-1 but three balls later it was over for the Bears as an unfortunate wide ball gave the Red Roses the run they needed.

It may not have been the way Warwickshire Women wanted to finish the season but some brilliant fielding and great individual batting performances helped the Bears put up a fight to the very end with no thanks to the weather in many occasions.

The Bears will now start their T20 campaign against Surrey and Cricket Wales at home on Portland Road next Saturday.
