England and Warwickshire fast bowler Issy Wong says she is super excited for the prospect of playing a Women’s Ashes fixture at Edgbaston Stadium in 2023.

For the first time, Birmingham will host a Men’s and Women’s Ashes fixture in the same summer, and this will follow what was a hugely successful Women’s T20 competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Over 125,000 people visited Edgbaston Stadium as part of the Games, with Australia winning Gold in a dramatic final against India.

England Women will return to Birmingham in 2023 to compete in a Vitality Women’s Ashes IT20 against the old enemy – and Wong can’t wait.

“I’m really excited for the Ashes to return to England next year,” she said. “Amy (Jones) and I are super excited to get back to Edgbaston.

“The atmosphere there during the Commonwealth Games and The Hundred was really something quite special so we’re hoping to replicate that next year.

“We can’t wait to get out there and bring those Ashes back home.”

Former England all-rounder and now interim Chief Executive, Clare Connor, has also spoke about a special summer for the sport in 2023 and the importance of having the Men’s and Women’s game on the same parity.

“Next summer will be huge for England Women and England Men,” Connor said. “There are few events more special in English sport than a home Ashes series. I know both teams will be excited and driven by the challenge of regaining the Ashes.

“June and July will be very special months for cricket in this country with the buzz of two Ashes series taking place simultaneously. The women’s game continues to grow and we have clearly entered another phase in terms of the demand for elite women’s sport.

“We’ve seen record numbers flock to stadia for the second season of The Hundred and now we want to give more fans the chance to watch England women in person next summer as they compete for the Ashes on home soil.”
