A serious contender

With the Bears bowling ranks heavily depleted by injuries during the 2019 season, young swing bowler George received a surprise call-up to the first-team – and emphatically seized his opportunity.

In three championship games at the back end of the season, the former Shrewsbury School pupil bowled with intelligence and composure.

“George in particular has bowled superbly and thoroughly deserved his chance to step up to the first team.”

His performances suggested that he has the temperament, as well as the skills, to become a serious challenger for a long-term place in the attack.

His wickets were a key factor in the stunning fightback win over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in September.

Another product of the Bears’ increasingly productive player pathway,  on which he has been since U14s, George has in recent years combined his cricket with his studies at the University of Birmingham.
