A quietly powerful presence

Solihull-born Rob entered the 2019 season hoping to make a good impression for the 2nd XI and perhaps get a first-team game or two along the way.

He ended it with a maiden championship century under his belt and as a regular in the Bears’ red-ball team, having played 12 championship games and scored 570 runs, plenty of them important runs for the team, scored under pressure.

“Rob has grasped his opportunity in the first team with both hands. He has excellent character and I expect his century last summer to be the first of many that we see from him in a Warwickshire shirt.”

No-one around Edgbaston was surprised. The product of Moseley from the age of eight, and the Warwickshire age-groups from under 10s, had always impressed with his batting of composure, technique and application.

In 2021, his game continued to blossom. Yatesy’s 793 championship runs, including four centuries, put him top of the batting averages and formed a huge pillar in the Bears’ glorious title triumph.

Those runs also earned him an England Lions call to Australia where again he impressed. Still only 22, rarely has such a young player become such a key member of the Bears top order.
