Blast Report: Bears v Notts Outlaws

Notts Outlaws continued their assertive defence of the Vitality Blast title as they thrashed Birmingham Bears by 114 runs at Edgbaston.

The Outlaws made it seven wins from 11 games after brushing aside a Bears side hit by the loss of all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite after a positive COVID test.

They totalled 177 for nine thanks to Samit Patel (41, 30 balls), Ben Duckett (39, 20 balls) and Alex Hales (34, 21 balls) against a depleted attack led by Jake Lintott (three for 28).

The Bears’ reply then plunged into disarray at 19 for five and they were bowled out for 63, their lowest ever T20 total, as Jake Ball took three for 10, Calvin Harrison three for 12, including a triple wicket maiden, and Samit Patel two for eight.

Having taken 18 wickets at 13.33 apiece in the tournament, Brathwaite was a big loss to the Bears’ bowling and Notts, put in, set off in a manner to take full advantage. Opening pair Duckett and Hales smashed 54 in boundaries in a stand of 75 before both fell to superb catches.

Duckett was brilliantly caught by Matt Lamb at deep cover off Danny Briggs and Hales was well-held by Sam Hain running round the long on rope.

The introduction of spinner Lintott applied a brake and, though Patel batted with his customary verve, Notts were grateful for a late salvo of 18 in six balls from Harrison.

The Outlaws then torpedoed the Bears’ reply right at the top with three wickets in the first 17 balls. The spinners gave their side the perfect start as Patel dismissed Adam Hose, caught and bowled, in the first over and Matt Carter conceded just a single from the second.

Ball delivered the third and ended it with 1-0-4-2 after Will Rhodes lifted to mid on and Ed Pollock dragged a pull on to his stumps. Patel and Ball had not finished, foxing Hain and Lamb into sending up skiers to leave the innings in ruins at 19 for five.

Rob Yates and Michael Burgess took the score to 39, but a triple wicket maiden from Harrison, ousting Burgess, Tim Bresnan and Briggs, turned that into 39 for eight.

Rapturous applause from the big, good-natured crowd greeted the raising of the 50 but the Bears still have much work to do to qualify while The Outlaws are pretty much there with three games to spare.

Blast Preview: Bears v Outlaws

The Bears are buzzing after their stunning ten-wicket Vitality Blast win over Yorkshire Vikings at Edgbaston last night but face another “stern test” at home to Notts Outlaws tomorrow, says first team coach Mark Robinson.

Reigning Blast champions The Outlaws are flying high in the North Group and making a strong defence of their title.

They have plenty of power and skill in their squad, but will meet a Bears side which is fresh from delivering pretty much the perfect T20 performance after bowling The Vikings out for just 81 and then knocking them off without loss in 8.3 overs.

After such a display, it will be a case of ‘follow that’ at Edgbaston tomorrow and Robinson knows his side will have to hit high standards again against the holders (6.30pm).

“Yorkshire were a little bit depleted, let’s be honest, but to win by ten wickets was really special,” he said. “It was one of those freakish days where we bowled as well as we did in the previous game and yet suddenly we got the wickets all in a rush.

“You savour those days when everything falls into place and you are lucky enough to be on the right side of it. Now we’ve got another really exciting game coming up against Notts who are a powerhouse in T20. They have been the form team in T20 over the last three or four years so we will give them all the respect in the world, but we beat them at their place and have had a couple of good wins over them in the championship as well.

Mark Robinson

“So they hold no fears for us, but it will be a really good, stern test.”

The Bears have named an unchanged squad of 13 after welcoming spinner Jake Lintott back into the side last night. Lintott returned with a spell of customary skill in an collectiely impressive bowling display.

All the bowlers took wickets, the two batsmen who got in saw the job all the way through, the two who didn’t get in took excellent catches, the captain orchestrated astutely and the wicketkeeper took two catches and two stumpings…team performances don’t come much more complete than that.

It was the most emphatic way to bounce back from three successive defeats.

“We needed a win again for our belief and confidence because, apart from Carlos Brathwaite, Danny Briggs and Tim Bresnan, we are quite an inexperienced team in terms of the amount of T20 played,” Robinson said. “The confidence wasn’t necessarily disappearing, but a win like that just gives you that confirmation that the things you are doing are good and you are on the right track.”

Squad

Will Rhodes (C), Carlos Brathwaite, Tim Bresnan, Danny Briggs, Ethan Brookes, Michael Burgess (WK), Sam Hain, Oliver Hannon-Dalby, Adam Hose, Matt Lamb, Jake Lintott, Craig Miles, Ed Pollock.
