England complete record Test chase at Edgbaston

England nonchalantly completed a record chase of 378 to beat India in rapid time on the final morning of the fifth Test at Edgbaston.

Centuries from Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow took England to their highest successful pursuit in Test cricket and the ninth-largest in the history of the game.

Needing another 119 from their overnight 259/3, Root and Bairstow coasted with incredible ease, taking England to a memorable seven-wicket win, one of their all-time greatest victories in front of a near capacity crowd.

Bairstow’s 114 not out was his second century of the match, while Root ended unbeaten on 142 in an unbroken partnership of 269. They carried England to a new height in what is turning into a spectacular summer under new captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.

The win ensures a series that was postponed last summer is drawn 2-2 but, more importantly, it is the greatest validation to date of England’s ultra-positive approach to Test cricket.

Their next series is with South Africa in August, while an entirely different squad under new white-ball captain Jos Buttler plays the first of three Vitality IT20s against India on Thursday before arriving back in Edgbaston on Saturday.

Watch highlights from Day Four as the match swing in England’s favour to set up a famous win on the final day.

England name squad for India Test at Edgbaston

Kent wicketkeeper Sam Billings has been added to the England Men’s Test squad for the rearranged LV= Insurance fifth Test versus India starting on Friday at Edgbaston (10.30am start).

England enter the match off the back of a thumping 3-0 series win against New Zealand following victory on the final day of the third Test at Headingley on Monday. It capped an astonishing start for captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, who took over before the series following England’s run of one win in 17 Tests.

The series will conclude in Birmingham with India leading 2-1 after the first four Tests which took place last summer.

Rohit Sharma is set to captain the India side which sees Cheteshwar Pujara return to the squad after missing the home Test series against Sri Lanka, while Ravindra Jadeja is also part of the touring party.

Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are also set to feature in a strong India team.

Day One, Two and Three are all sold out and only limited tickets are now left for Day Four, with adult prices starting from £26 and under 16s only £6. Tickets for Day Five are also on sale now.
