Report: Lancashire vs Warwickshire, Metro Bank One Day Cup

Hamza Shaikh made 75 and leg-spinner Taz Ali took three for 39 to help Warwickshire beat Lancashire by five wickets at Aigburth and boost their hopes of reaching the knock-out stages of the Metro Bank One Day Cup.

Having restricted the home side to 249 for nine on a spinner’s pitch, Ed Barnard’s side reached their target with 61 balls to spare, Kai Smith finishing on 45 not out, having put on 77 with Shaikh.

The one consolation for a severely understrength Lancashire was that Jack Blatherwick took a career-best four for 48, but Marcus Harris’ side have now won just one of their seven matches in this competition, and their own slim chances of making further progress had vanished with Wednesday’s defeat to Durham.

Michael Jones was caught behind for nought off Ethan Bamber’s second ball of the game, but George Bell and Kesh Fonseka then batted positively against the Bears’ seamers to give their side a respectable platform of 69 for one after 15 overs.

However, 33 of the next 35 overs were bowled by the Warwickshire spinners, and scoring runs never looked as straightforward as it had done in the first hour of the game. Lancashire’s second-wicket pair put on 87 before Fonseka was caught at cover by Shaikh for 43 when driving Ali, and the leg-spinner took his second wicket in his next over when Bell was leg-before for 46 attempting to sweep.

Harris and Harry Singh then tried to rebuild the innings with a stand of 68 in 13 overs, only for Singh to depart for 29 when he pulled Rob Yates straight to Alex Davies at deep midwicket, and the left-handed Harris to be bowled for 41 by a lovely off-spinner from Yates.

Ali took his third wicket when George Balderson pulled him straight to Zen Malik, and the remainder of Lancashire’s innings was dominated by Arav Shetty, who consolidated the good impression he’s made during this competition by making 40 off 30 balls.

Shetty, though, was one of two wickets to fall to Jake Lintott in the 49th over of the innings, and the experienced Warwickshire leggie finished with two for 62 from his ten overs. Yates finished with two for 44, but it was Ali’s bowling that had taken the eye – and not for the first time this month.

Warwickshire’s reply got off to a thunderous start, eight boundaries being struck and 44 runs scored in the opening four overs. But the visitors’ progress was slowed, first when Ed Barnard was caught by Bell when trying to scoop Blatherwick for 21 and then when Yates tried to slap Blatherwick through mid-on but only found Balderson’s safe hands and departed for 23.

Former Lancashire batter Alex Davies was then surprised by the lift Blatherwick extracted from the Aigburth pitch and was caught behind for eight to leave his side on 71 for three in the eleventh over. That, though, was as near as the home side got to upsetting the form book.

Shaikh put on 97 with Zen Malik, who reached his maiden List A fifty off 39 balls and seemed set for a century when his attempt to hit Blatherwick for six over mid-off only found the safe hands of Jones on the cover boundary, departing for 72. Seemingly untroubled by this setback, Shaikh reached his own fifty off 74 balls, and Warwickshire’s victory was all but certain long before Shaikh was bowled by Luke Hands when his side needed five runs.

Warwickshire Captain Ed Barnard said, “I think that’s our most pleasing win in this year’s competition. It was really professional and all the bowlers bowled brilliantly and our spin was really effective.

“To keep them down to what we thought was a below par score and then to knock it off really professionally like that was excellent.

“We didn’t plan to bowl that much spin but it seemed to be really effective and all the bowlers who came on bowled beautifully, including Rob Yates, who bowled ten on the spin.

“I’ve said the last few years that it’s an opportunity for experienced players to win a trophy but also for the young lads in. They’re such high quality players but it’s really pleasing to see them turn in match-winning performances.

“The supporters have been brilliant from the first ball and it was really nice to see and hear a few Bears in the crowd. It’s another new ground ticked off for me and I don’t think many of the lads have played here, so to get a win like that was really pleasing.”

Preview: Lancashire vs Warwickshire, Metro Bank One Day Cup

The Bears will face Lancashire at Aigburth tomorrow, knowing that victory over the Red Rose would leave them strongly placed in the group when they continue north to face Durham at Chester-le-Street on Sunday.

The group is still wide open with three games to go. After their two away games, the Bears return to Edgbaston for the final group fixture, against Sussex next Tuesday.

Two wins from the last three matches should be enough to send the Bears into the knockout phase. Three definitely would. But Barnard and his side will put all the possible permutations out of mind tomorrow and focus solely on Liverpool and Lancashire, aiming to emulate their excellent performance at Taunton last Sunday.

“It was a fantastic win at Somerset and a really good team performance with everyone chipping in,” the captain said. “It was quite a strange chase with a lot of contributions, which shows how many of the lads are hitting the ball well at the minute, though hopefully in the games coming up, one of the top order can get a big score and make it easier for ourselves.

“We are in a decent position in the group. It looks as though two more wins might be enough, though obviously we want to win every game. We now have two tough away trips, but hopefully we can come back to Edgbaston next Tuesday for the last group game in a nice position and in with a chance of even winning the group.

“I haven’t played at Liverpool before, so I’m really looking forward to tomorrow, it’s another ground to tick off. It’s always fun playing at outgrounds, and they had a good game there yesterday, so we are all really looking forward to playing there.”

Warwickshire’s visit to Aigburth could be a good omen for their Metro Bank campaign. They have visited the lovely Merseyside outground only once before in List A cricket – and it led to a trophy. In 1980, the Bears, captained by Bob Willis, played there in the John Player League and won by nine wickets after a Willis-led bowling attack restricted Lancashire to 173, and a century opening stand by Dennis Amiss and Andy Lloyd turned the chase into a stroll.

Two months later, the Bears completed one of the most remarkable turnarounds in county cricket – having finished bottom of the table in 1979, in 1980 they finished top and lifted the trophy.
