Day Two

Warwickshire’s bowlers got more important mileage in their legs before rain brought an early end to Day Two of this pre-season warm-up against Leicestershire.

Liam Norwell bowled more overs than anyone else as he continues his steady recovery from the back injury that ruled him out for the whole of the 2023 campaign.

Norwell bowled eight of the day’s 36 overs, finishing with figures of 8-1-38-0 from his two four-over spells.

Chris Rushworth and Michael Booth took a wicket apiece as, respectively, they enticed edges to Rob Yates at slip and wicket keeper Michael Burgess.

Leicestershire’s Sol Budinger scored 52 from 45 balls before nicking Rushworth, while Booth had Rishi Patel caught behind on 59 (71 balls).

Louis Kimber retired on 50 (73 balls) to leave Lewis Hill (36) and England spinner Rehan Ahmed (24) in the middle before the rain returned.

Ed Barnard, Danny Briggs and Will Rhodes also got a run out as they got through 15 overs between them.

Day One

Edgbaston evaded the expected showers as the Bears gained more valuable playing time on grass.

With proceedings called to a close at 5pm due to bad light and then rain, the Bears were still able to get 68 overs into the legs on a day where anything played was gravy.

Batting first, Mark Robinson’s side were led out by Alex Davies and Rob Yates with the pair showing intent with an 84 run partnership off 16.3 overs. Once Yates (29) departed, caught behind by Ben Cox, Davies followed him up the stairs on 48 not out (50 balls, 9×4) to allow the middle order to get some time in the middle.

Under threatening skies, players departed either out or at their own accord, with Ed Barnard mirroring the Captain on 48 not out (80 balls, 6×4, 1×6).

Dan Mousley (26*) and Liam Norwell (16*) added a late flurry as the Bears reached 229/9 from 58 overs with Tea taken at 3.40pm.

Resuming 20 minutes after and under the lights, Chris Rushworth and Olly Hannon-Dalby bowled five and four overs respectively, whilst Ed Barnard ended the session with the visitors closing on 52/0.

The forecast tomorrow is in the balance, but both sides will be hoping any showers pass to allow another important day of preparation ahead of next Friday’s Vitality County Championship opener.
