Report: Warwickshire v Essex, Second XI

Warwickshire Second XI fell agonisingly 29-runs short as Essex edged a Second XI Championship thriller at the Edgbaston Community Sports Ground.

Set 293 to win, Bears were unable to build a solid partnership around centurion Nikhil Gorantla who anchored an exciting run chase. Gorantla, a right-handed batter on trial from SACA, was dismissed with his side on 259/9, but the hosts will rue their opportunity at 193/5.

The match itself was an even affair with Warwickshire holding a slender six-run lead at the halfway stage after Che Simmons took three wickets and Chris Benjamin (60) and Jake Lintott (50) put on 55.

But with the pendulum swinging towards the Bears, Ben Allison – with 44 first team appearances to his name – fired 76*, including a 53-run tenth wicket partnership, to set the tougher target.

Despite the defeat, Amir Khan (54 & 42) and Hamza Shaikh (38 & 42) both impressed at the top of the order, whilst Tom Davis took eight wickets, including a third innings 5-fer.
